Privately owned retail business seeks an HR Director to join the senior leadership team and lead people strategies across the organisation to build a culture of lasting success. 

Our client
Our client is the Owner Operator of a chain of retail stores across Canada providing products and services to a specific customer. Having led the business to its current size and created a profitable business with established brand and large customer base, the President now wants to create a step change in the business that will see it grow substantially and take it to the next level. As a result, they seek a new HR Director whose ambition and talent will match that of the organisation.

The role
The CEO understands that his is a 'People Business'. They provide a service to their customers and many of their staff are customer facing. Hence, in his words, 'it is all about the people and getting the most out of (our) people'.

He is looking for an experienced HR Director who had worked within an entrepreneurial environment previously and has experience building and developing a culture of success and behaviors that align with the companies' ambition for continued success. The role has one direct report but central to your success will be defining the structure of your own team and building an HR function that best supports this growing business. Currently approximately 100 full time and another 30-50 hourly staff, this business has locations across Canada and therefore needs an HR leader who is able to influence across an organisation. 

This role will see the successful candidate become a confidant to the CEO and will give the individual a 'seat at the table' to influence the overall direction of the organisation both from a people perspective but also in any other way that you can positively impact the organisation. 

The role will include all the core HR functions such as Recruitment, Organisational Design, Training and Development, Compensation and Benefits, Employee Relations, Compliance, Health and Safety and HR Strategy. It is important that the candidate is capable in all of these functions but we do not need an expert in any one particular area. However, it is important that the person is hands on and prepared to get stuck into whatever needs doing. For example, until any further decisions are made on recruitment, the individual will have to be prepared to run recruitment activities. Longer term it will become more of a strategic role as you empower line managers and your own team to lead functional activities but initially it is important you can do these things. 

As a mid sized retailer this business has out grown the small business tag and firmly has its ambitions set on becoming a larger corporation. It needs an HR director that shares that ambition, that buys into the overall opportunity and has the skill set to lift the performance of the people to improve the overall results of the business.

The candidate
You should have an HR qualification and have successful, proven experience leading the HR strategy for a business. You should have a broad HR skill set and have experience across all functions of HR.  
You will be operating at board level and need proven experience influencing at this level. You should be comfortable leading a team yet equally comfortable rolling up your sleeves and getting things done.
You must be a result orientated HR Director with strong analytical skills. The owner very much believes in the importance of people and the value that they can bring to the business when properly engaged and managed.
Experience does not need to be from a retail environment but does need include working directly with an entrepreneur.
