Our client, a growing leader in the food manufacturing industry, is seeking a Research & Development Director of Technology to join its R&D team.
  • Provide leadership in new product innovation and creation
  • Manage and coordinate the development potential of new research projects and services
  • Work closely with cross functional teams to ensure product quality, excellence, compliance with specifications and profitability by ensuring formulations and costing accuracy of raw materials
  • Continuously search for alternative ingredients to reduce raw materials SKU’S
  • Initiate, develop, and implement product formulations to achieve cost reductions and maintain organization’s competitive position and profitability
  • Oversee production first runs for new products
  • Lead sourcing and evaluation of new ingredient solutions
  • Responsible for development and implementation of dry mix formulas
  • Accountable for ensuring staff follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), while ensuring staff are in compliance with the British Retail Council (BRC), Occupational Health and Safety Act, HACCP, and Quality and Food Safety standards
  • Maintain a safe and secure work environment for all employees
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with cross-functional business teams including Marketing, Sales, Regulatory, Operations, Finance, Legal, and Creative Agencies & Partners
  • Lead the development and implementation of program methodology, protocols, and procedures, as appropriate to the company objectives of research programs and projects
  • Consistent and continuous awareness of food and bakery trends, such as baking techniques and packaging in bakery and confectionary   
  • Responsible for validation and execution of all new products
  • Create tentative specifications of products under development
  • Supervise and coordinate product launches and R&D plant trials
  • Provide technical and professional guidance and assistance
  • Coordinate and schedule lab techs on samples and sample requests
  • Responsible for all quality parameters of new product development per customer expectations and line specifications
  • Authorize all new product handling instructions and SOP’s
  • Coordinate all shelf-life evaluations for frozen and ambient product execution
  • Responsible for continuous cost and quality improvements of all existing products
  • Determine the fat, sugar, vitamin, and mineral content of products
  • Research ways to improve testing, preservation, packaging, and manufacturing methods
  • Establish schedules and allocate resources as required to complete projects
  • Support and assist plants in Health & Safety compliance; instills a sense of urgency around compliance, and increases awareness through involvement with committee
  • Bachelor Degree in Food Science & Technology
  • 5+ years in the food manufacturing with professional experience in product ideation, creation, and development
  • Exceptional ability to lead project initiatives from conception to completion with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills with strong oral and written skills
  • Strong creative, organizational and planning skills with ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously
  • Project management, scheduling and prioritizing skills
  • Big picture thinking with ability to sweat the details of all projects
  • Awareness of any new technology published by local and international scientific communities
  • High level of knowledge of ingredients functionalities for bakery products, and confectionary would be an asset
  • Experience in “scale-up” of product from lab to production
  • Knowledge of the effect of freezing on frozen bakery dough and baked products
  • Extensive scientific knowledge on flours and their functionality in frozen dough, sour dough, and baked products
  • Understanding or courses completed in Grain Technology an asset
