Health, Safety & Environment Specialist
 
SUMMARY
The Sr. Safety Specialist, Distribution will be responsible for fulfilling assigned tasks, as well as taking the lead on creating detailed instructions, implementing procedures and conducting regular follow-ups and assessments to ensure staff and facility safety and environmental compliance at all locations across Canada. This role reports to the HSE Supervisor.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in developing, implementing and evaluating programs and procedures to assure staff and facility safety as well as environmental compliance
  • Assist Managers and Supervisors, under guidance of Corporate H&S, with interpretation and application of provincial federal legislation, including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, WHMIS Legislation, and the Fire Code
  • Work in collaboration with HR Business Partner to ensure 100% compliance with established safety policies and procedures
  • Revise Health and Safety manual policies and procedures
  • Coordinate the implementation, training and maintenance of Health and Safety policies and procedures as required
  • Provide training to employees, managers/supervisors, and senior management
  • Establish and participate in Branch H&S Committee/meetings
  • Conduct injury analysis on  monthly basis and submit to Corporate H&S and divisional Senior Management
  • Provide input for development and implementation of programs and record-keeping systems to track and evaluate HSE compliance including incidents related to injury and illness
  • Conduct basic trend analysis, audits, accident investigations, incident investigations and site inspections of operational procedures, facility design, equipment and materials
  • Complete reports, respond to enquiries and liaise with government bodies or outside parties such as the Ministry of Labor, Fire Department, Insurance carrier, etc.
  • Develop and maintain basic knowledge of federal, provincial and local environmental and occupational health legislation and regulations
  • Travel to Branch locations across Canada (40%)
  • Principal lead for the Fleet Safety Program
  • Principal lead for the Material Handling Equipment Program -  conduct hazard assessments, make recommendations, assist in development of solutions and follow up through to closure

 
REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably BS Degree in Safety Engineering
  • Minimum 3-5 years of Health & Safety experience in a similar setting
  •  
  • Experience overseeing a multi-site operation
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to engage, motivate and lead employees
  • Strong decision making and problem solving skills
  • Business acumen to understand and interpret associated KPIs related to company and department performance
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and time management skills
  • Must have excellent knowledge of Federal, Provincial and local environmental and occupational health legislation and regulations
