Health, Safety, Environment Supervisor

Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing, the HSE Manager will provide leadership to build a collective safety culture aimed at educating the business to drive safety compliance with a proactive approach and emphasis on leading indicators.
  • Direct and indirect responsibility for approximately 20 businesses units in Ontario and across Canada. 
  • Responsible for the day-to-day leadership of staff, group of two direct reports.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations
  • Team attendance tracking, mentoring and directing
  • Ensures compliance with federal, provincial, and local environmental and occupational health legislation and regulations
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates HSE programs and HSE procedures to ensure regulatory/company compliance
  • Work with all Canadian safety representatives and be the primary lead on policies and procedures related to Canadian legislation.
  • Workplace injury management to include WSIB and/or MOL reporting, training and injury reduction   
  • Develops and implements programs and record keeping systems to track and evaluate environmental compliance and staff injury and illness experience 
  • Conducts trend analysis and develops action plans for improvement
  • Facilitates and develops work processes for audits, accident investigations, incident investigations and site inspections of operational procedures, facility design, equipment and materials 
  • Analyzes data in compliance with current regulations and makes appropriate recommendations to prevent new or recurring accidents and environmental issues
  • Develops training plans and responsibilities for employee training, including emergency preparedness, material handling, WHMIS, TDG, monthly safety talk training, etc.
  • Coordinate and facilitate HSE training programs and initiatives such as industrial hygiene testing, confined space reports, etc.
  • Facilitate investigations of HSE incidents including completion of RCA’s and implementation and closure of corrective actions
  • Manages the sites Environmental program to include regular environmental team meetings, new chemical approval process, and new equipment purchase and process changes
  • Ensures compliance with annual environmental reporting requirements (i.e. NPRI, TRA, etc.)
  • Business Liaison to the MOL, MOE, Fire Department, Insurance Company and Landlord
  • Provide guidance and assistance to the sites’ Joint Health & Safety Coordinator
  • Attend and represents the company’s interest in WSIB appeal hearings
  • Review and assist senior management and legal counsel in HSE legal matters
  • Monthly & quarterly safety reporting
  • Performs any additional responsibilities or tasks as assigned
  • Requires University degree
  • Minimum 10 years of Health and Safety experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a supervisory role
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills
  • Able to remain positive and adapt to frequent change in the workplace, including delays and/or unexpected events
  • Strong communication skills to engage, motivate and lead employees
  • Strong decision making and problem solving skills
  • Business acumen to understand and interpret associated KPIs related to company and department performance
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and time management skills
  • Must have excellent knowledge of federal, provincial and local environmental and occupational health legislation and regulations
